Tatum Monod

Pro Skier

Intro

Meet Tatum Monod. Banff-born freeride ripper, pioneer, and one of the most badass skiers out there. Raised in her family’s mountain shop, Monod Sports, skis and snow have been part of her DNA from day one. She made history as the first woman to land a double backflip in the backcountry, has taken home the “Skier of the Year” award multiple times, and consistently turns heads with edits that push the edge of what’s possible on a pair of skis. Her high energy, relentless drive, and genuine love for the sport are just part of what makes her one of the most influential skiers of her generation.

When Tatum isn’t dominating the slopes, you’ll find her with a fly rod in hand or chasing blacktail deer in British Columbia. Through and through, she’s an all-around outdoorwoman.

Q&A

What is your profession? And did you always know this is what you would end up doing, or was it something you stumbled into?
I am a professional skier, but at heart I’m an all-around outdoor enthusiast. I’ve dedicated my life to skiing and I’m proud to have made my passion my profession. My other outdoor pursuits, like hunting and fishing, shape and fulfill me just as much as skiing does.

When you’re not doing your core pursuit, what else do you enjoy doing?
Some of my earliest memories are of fly fishing in my dad’s drift boat when I was small enough to fit in a Tupperware bin! Fishing is a huge part of who I am, whether I’m chasing saltwater species, trout in Alberta, or swinging a fly for steelhead, I just love being on the water. Valuing where my food comes from has always been important to me, which is why hunting has also become such a core passion of mine.

How do you incorporate music into your life?
A lot of what I do requires stillness, observation, and silence: whether it’s skiing in avalanche terrain, fishing the flats, or still hunting through the forest. Music is how I decompress after being immersed in those environments, and it’s also the tool that fuels my training.

What does “Live Free” mean to you?
It means living in a way that feels true to me, not dictated by others’ expectations.

Any guilty pleasures?
McDonald’s. Why is it that while trying to put the world’s best protein (wild game) into the freezer, I’m hitting the McDonald’s drive-thru?

What’s your hottest take or most controversial opinion?
That French Bulldogs are not useless. My Frenchie Burley has summited more mountains than most. ;)

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you in the wild/on tour?
I fell from the top of a mountain in Alaska to the bottom and blew every ligament in my knee.

Who is your favorite musical artist? Or what are you listening to right now?
I’m a chameleon when it comes to music! I enjoy a little bit of everything: from Zach Top, to oldies like Johnny Cash, pop country like Ella Langley, but I also get down with energizing music like house or electronic.

Favorite Turtlebox speaker and why? How do you use it?
The Original. I love pairing multiples for the full surround experience.
