Kimi Werner

Spearfisher

Intro

Born and raised in rural Maui, Kimi’s life has been tied to the ocean since day one. She grew up watching her dad spearfish to put food on the table, learning early that the ocean is something to respect. Following in her father’s footsteps, Kimi grew up to become a spearfisher. But what sets her apart isn’t just skill, it’s her mindset. Kimi believes we’re part of nature, not separate from it, and that hunting and conservation should go hand in hand.

A true waterwoman, she hunts with intention, fishes selectively, and carries a deep sense of gratitude for every day spent in the water. Conservation is at the center of how she lives. We’re proud to welcome Kimi Werner to the Turtlebox family.

Q&A

What is your profession? And did you always know this is what you would end up doing, or was it something you stumbled into?
I am a freediving spearfisherwoman. The underwater world has always been my favorite place and I was introduced to it at a very young age as it was the primary place my dad would source food from to feed our family. He did this back when they didn't have much money so it actually feels beautifully ironic that by taking me along with him, he was actually introducing me to my passion and future livelihood. I would've never expected to make a career out of this lifestyle, all I knew is that I loved it so much.

When you’re not doing your core pursuit, what else do you enjoy doing?
I love looking for seashells or other treasures with my son Buddy. I truly enjoy cooking for my family and being in wild places. I also love playing with our puppy, Palala.

How do you incorporate music into your life?
I love being out on the ocean, on a boat or jet ski and listening to my favorite songs. It just sets the vibe of pure celebration and makes me feel so alive and present in the moment.

What does “Live Free” mean to you?
"Live Free" means to not be shackled by the molds and boxes the outside pressure puts on us. It's about listening to our true authentic voice inside even if it goes against the norms of society.

Any guilty pleasures?
"Wasting" time hanging with our dog instead of being work-productive. Cold beer in the middle of a weekday. And one day I'm going to say, "only flying first class" but I still can't stomach those prices yet.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you in the wild/on tour?
I rode a great white shark once.

Who is your favorite musical artist? Or what are you listening to right now?
I'm currently listening to Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac.

Favorite Turtlebox speaker and why? How do you use it?
The Ranger. I love to bring it on the boat, jet ski, and in the sauna!
