Meet Jason Matzinger. Big game hunter, filmmaker, and someone who has spent his life in the wild places most people only dream about. Born and raised in Montana, Jason grew up with the mountains in his backyard and hunting in his DNA. What started as a life built around the pursuit eventually led him behind the camera, because what he was seeing out there every day was too special not to share. Today he's an award-winning film and television producer and the host of Into High Country on the Sportsman Channel, featuring hunts across the western United States and Canada. When he's not in the backcountry, you'll find him camping, fishing, and hiking with his boys. Welcome to the crew, Jason.
Q&A
What is your profession? And did you always know this is what you would end up doing, or was it something you stumbled into?
I'm a filmmaker and hunter. I always knew I would end up revolving my life around hunting in some way, but the filming and filmmaking came later. I realized what I was seeing out there every day was truly special, so I started capturing it to share it with more people.
When you’re not doing your core pursuit, what else do you enjoy doing?
My biggest passion in life right now is watching my boys grow up. It's going by way too fast, so we try to get out camping, fishing, and hiking when they aren't playing sports or riding bulls. Family time is number one for me.
How do you incorporate music into your life?
Music feeds my soul and inspires me to achieve my goals every single day. Whether that's working out in the morning, editing a new film during the day, or setting the right vibe around the campfire at night, music controls my emotions.
What does “Live Free” mean to you?
Live Free means to live your life with purpose by doing what makes you happy and feeds your soul, regardless of the noise around you.
Any guilty pleasures?
Some may say getting the fire a little too hot.
What’s your hottest take or most controversial opinion?
Decisions on wildlife and wild places should never be made by politicians or in courtrooms.
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you in the wild/on tour?
Hard to decide: rolling a truck off a logging road at night on a mountain goat hunt in British Columbia, or coming face to face with a grizzly after forgetting my pepper spray and pistol at home. So many to choose from.
Who is your favorite musical artist? Or what are you listening to right now?
Silas Noah is currently sitting at number one on my playlist, although I listen to everything from Bob Seger to Eminem and get into all of it.
Favorite Turtlebox speaker and why? How do you use it?
The Ranger is my current go-to because of its size and solid magnets. It's a staple in every camp I set up. Tough question though, they all have their place.
