Gabrielle Alvarez

Fly Fishing Guide

Intro

Guiding fly fishing trips has taken Gabrielle all over the world. Her love for fishing was passed down from her dad and grandpa. What started as a hobby in the Florida Keys eventually turned into her calling and career. When she’s not chasing her next personal best on the water, you’ll find her in the woods tracking whitetail or working the land at her lease. Her free time is spent riding her horse Poseidon, hanging with her dog Red, and experimenting with wild game recipes inspired by late-night cooking shows. Gabrielle’s passion for the outdoors runs deep, and we’re proud to have her on the Turtlebox team.

Q&A

What is your profession? Did you always know this is what you would end up doing or was it something you “stumbled into”?
I’m a fly-fishing guide. My love for fishing was imparted to me by my father and grandfather in the Keys. And while I knew that I was addicted to the tug of a fish, I never thought I’d be a professional fly-fishing guide. When I moved from Florida to Georgia, I had to find something else to fish for. I discovered that if I was careful, I could slip out of fourth period and go hit some bass ponds that were close to my high school. You know, for educational purposes. From there I discovered trout in the Appalachian Mountains. It’s also where I had a one on one with God about what I wanted to do with my life. So, I would say that while I may not have planned this, I believe that it was part of the plan for my life. “Ask and you shall receive”.

Favorite movie?
Well, I love a great flick but I can’t just give one!! My top 5 list! Tombstone, We Were Soldiers, The Whole Band of Brothers series (I know, I know, not a movie), Pride and Prejudice, and The Man From Snowy River.

Favorite book?
I have many but one I do really love is The Shack by William P. Young.

Most inspiring quote, piece of art, saying, or advice that has impacted the way you live today?
“It’s not all about the harvest or catching the biggest fish. Get out there and learn as much as you can. And keep your freaking rod down, don’t trout set.” – Gabe Wittosch There are so many people that have taken me under their wing and been a light to me in this industry, but Gabe and the fellas at the Fish Hawk have gone above and beyond for me. I am beyond blessed to call them my close friends and mentors. I truly do not know where id be today without them.

When you’re not working, what are you doing for fun?
I love to bow hunt, turkey hunt, and ride my horse. My side quest is to catch a Snook over 35’ on the fly. UPDATE: I lost a giant the other day.

Coolest place you’ve ever traveled?
Everywhere is cool if I can fish it.

Bucket list destination you haven’t been yet?
Seychelles

You’re stranded on a deserted island - who is coming with you and why?
Jesus, for obvious reasons. My dog Red and Chef Gordan Ramsay.

You get to have drinks with anyone (dead or alive) - who are you calling?
Andy Mill

What advice would you give an 18-year-old that wants to do what you do?
Save your money so you can go on as many adventures as possible. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Stay true to yourself and love like Jesus. Be kind, you never know what someone is battling privately. Spend as much time with your parents and grandparents as you can. They won’t always be there. Be a friend to all.

Any guilty pleasures?
Cuban coffee

Favorite wild meat/fish to eat? And in what kind of meal do you prepare it/eat it?
One of my favorite things to cook up is Duck Confit with lemon pepper Risotto, Country fried venison backstraps with homemade gravy…Another one of my favorites to prepare. I love to feed people and always have an extra seat at my table.

What’s your favorite element of Turtlebox?
Honestly, what's not to love? I’m an incredibly clumsy person and drop things on the regular so having a Turtlebox is perfect for me. It's durable, waterproof and loud as hell.

How do you use your Turtlebox?
Whenever I can get away with listening to music while I’m outside or in the shower!

Name the most famous contact in your phone?
Rob “Atlanta Mustache” Smith. He checks on me regularly and is a dear friend and role model. A local legend to most of my peers!
